Starting Recovery: What to Expect

Knowing what happens after you call makes the call easier. Here is the sequence, from first contact through treatment.

Person walking through the entrance of a substance use treatment facility taking the first step toward recovery

It starts with a call to admissions at (270) 689-6879. Staff will ask about your substance use, past treatment and current situation, explain the options, answer questions and schedule an assessment.

At the assessment, a clinician goes through your substance use history, medical and mental health history, living situation and goals, and uses the ASAM criteria to recommend a level of care.

That might be residential treatment at The Amethyst Center or Onyx Center, outpatient counseling, medication-assisted treatment, or some combination. If something stands in the way, such as childcare, work or transportation, say so; it changes the plan.

If you are going into residential treatment, you get a list of what to bring and what arrival day looks like. For outpatient care, we schedule your first appointments and explain how the program runs.

The plan is reviewed and adjusted as treatment goes on. Recovery isn’t a straight line, and a setback doesn’t put you back at the start.
