IDD Crisis Services

A mental health or behavioral crisis looks different in someone with an intellectual or developmental disability (IDD), and standard crisis response often misses it. Our IDD Crisis Services team is trained for exactly these situations.

A change in behavior, aggression, self-injury, running off or intense emotional outbursts can all be signs of a crisis underneath.

Specialists work with people across the IDD spectrum, including those who speak little or not at all, people with autism, and people who also have a mental health condition. They adapt how they communicate, using plain language, visual supports and familiar routines.

Services include crisis assessment and intervention, behavior support planning, coordination with the person’s existing care team, connection to ongoing IDD services, and guidance for caregivers. The team works with families, group home staff, schools and day programs, the people who know the person best.

In a crisis, call the crisis line at 1-800-433-7291. The team assesses the situation and responds with phone guidance, a Mobile Crisis Team visit, a referral, or help getting emergency care when it is needed.

IDD Crisis Services are available across our seven-county area.

What to Expect

When you call, the team asks about the person and what is happening right now. If there is an existing care plan or behavior support plan, have it handy. Specialists give guidance, coordinate the response, and afterward help build a plan to head off the next crisis, with the caregivers and providers the person already knows.
